PAST FESTIVALS

8th Fidelio Trio Winter Chamber Music Festival

In this extraordinarily challenging year for musicians and audiences we were deeply grateful to the Fidelio Trio (Darragh Morgan, Mary Dullea and Tim Gill) and the festival manager John O’ Flynn for ensuring that we had a festival. Filmed from an equally beautiful location as their usual Belvedere House on the DCU Drumcondra Campus, and with all of the standards of excellence we have come to expect from the Fidelios, the concerts were released on the performance date (Fri 27th, Sat 28th, Sun 29th November) through a dedicated channel. Audiences are able to listen free to the 2020 festival at this link.

The exciting three-day programme of concerts celebrating a diverse range of composers, included new discoveries such as Irish composer Joan Trimble’s Phantasy Trio, well-loved works by Ravel, Debussy and Satie and cutting edge new commissions, in particular, Irish Composer David Fennessy’s Piano Trio no 2. In this 250th anniversary of Beethoven this important new work was paired with Beethoven’s ‘Archduke Trio’. You can find the full programme and the details here. Throughout the festival the Trio commemorated musicians recently and previously departed. Together with Beethoven, the Irish composer Eric Sweeney, who died in 2020 was fondly remembered by the Trio in his Berceuse for Flute and Cello and the festival commission ‘In Memoriam Spencer Boney’ is dedicated to the memory of the founding pianist in the Fidelio Trio.

Project Prelude 2020 was an important addition to the festival. This initiative in partnership with the Contemporary Music Centre is part of the Fidelio Trio’s professional development work with composers. The composers selected in 2020 included Amelia Clarkson, Richard McReynolds (writing for solo violin); Amy Rooney, Tosh Molloy (writing for cello), Aoife Kavanagh, and Tommy Grace (writing for piano).

Because of our Arts Council funding, the resources of GlasDrum and the work of our voluntary committee we were able to bring you this festival free of charge while all the musicians and technical crew were paid. Past audiences will remember the scintillating and deeply considered performances of the Trio and new audiences have an amazing treat in store. Sincere thanks to those of you who would like to make a donation that will provide funding for future festivals -donate here

7th Fidelio Trio Winter Chamber Music Festival

Once again The Fidelio Trio - Darragh Morgan (Violin), Adi Tal (Cello), Mary Dullea (Piano) bring a wonderful programme to the 7th year of this very special festival. Their guests this year are the outstanding US based, Apple Hill String Quartet - Elise Kuder (violin), Colleen Jennings (violin), Mike Kelley (viola), Rupert Thompson (cello). Amazing ambassadors for both Irish composition and the piano trio repertoire, the Fidelio Trio have programmed two world premieres (Brian Irvine and Louis Karchin) alongside the well-loved chamber works of Rachmaninov, Mozart and Schumann. This will be an astonishing weekend of great beauty and revealing and insightful performances.

The Festival opens on Friday at 7.30, with two concerts on Saturday at 6.00 and 8.00 and a final performance on Sunday at 3.00. Tickets can be purchased by credit card through this website or in cash at the issue desk of the Cregan Library on the DCU St Patrick's Campus. It is advisable to book tickets early as the Library of the historic Belvedere House accommodates a small audience as befits chamber music.

Brought to you by Music at DCU and GlasDrum. This project has been made possible with funding from the Arts Council – An Chomhairle Ealaíon and is supported by RTE Supporting the Arts and Dublin City University (DCU).
